Pessoal,

That's it

Como a abordagem lexical pode mudar o modo como você ensina? Empty A Gramática está na Lexical Approach

Mensagem  DenilsodeLima Ter Jan 10, 2012 2:52 pm

Olá Caroll,

Ufa!

Mensagem  Cris Tavella Ter Jan 10, 2012 5:31 pm

Hi everyone,

I think that this topic is FANTASTIC!
The students can learn and speak faster! It's good for them and for us, teachers.
The student's will achieve their/our goals and see the results in "real life" (at school, job, internet, etc).
But I have a problem with that: I have some students that they are a little bit resistant with that... They "need" to learn English as the IXX century! They don't accept that fact that we have other options to teach/learn.... What can we do with them?

What can I say... I loooooove Grammar!
And I also loooooove Lexis/Vacabulary!

I believe learning more about the Lexical approch will help me find news ways to work in class and get things done in a better/more fun/more effective way.
We keep reading that students can't see the point of studying what is taught at school, that they can't apply it in real life... I want to help them change this point of view... help them feel comfortable enough to try out new possibilities, to communicate "fluently".

Como a abordagem lexical pode mudar o modo como você ensina? Empty How can we make learners see new ways?

Mensagem  DenilsodeLima Ter Jan 10, 2012 9:03 pm

Cris,

Your question is really interesting. I must confess that I also faced this very same problem when I started learning about the Lexical Approach and trying to have it in my classes. This was back in 1998, the year I started learning about this "approach". Unfortunately, learners are heavily grammar influenced. This is so, because our language learning/teaching system puts too much emphasis on grammatical knowledge. Just think of paradigms like "eu não sei nem português direito quanto mais inglês". People don't realize that they know Portuguese, they use the language, the can convey their ideas with it and so on without know the formal grammar, the technicalities of the grammar.

Anyway, to answer your question, one thing I started doing was to show them (I used to give them examples in Portuguese) that knowing the "whys" is not the whole basis for learning how to use the language properly. I would also give them examples in English so that they could get the point and think about it.

Well, a sentence I like making use of in situations like these is the (in)famous "the book is on the table". Most people - even those who have never studied English - know this sentence. It is a strange fact (or not) that people know how to pronounce it (not perfectly but they may get closer), they know the meaning of it, they know how to use it (although there's no big deal in using this sentence). I then get the most curious looks when I asked students about the grammatical order of the words in this sentence. I also ask about the preposition, the verb to be, etc. I ask them about the grammar. I want them to tell me the grammar in this sentence.

As they can't give me a proper answer, they get kind of frustated. But, I take opportunity of this situation to tell them that learning (knowing) the grammatical points of a language is not necessary when learning a language. After telling them about this, I usually give other examples: "what's your name?", "my name's ...", "how old are you?", "thank you very much", "you're welcome" and so on and so forth.

The point I try to make is to show them that they can learn lots of sentences and expressions (lexis/vocabulary) in English whithout getting too much worried about the grammar. When I see their heads shaking in agreement, I give them the sentence "have you ever been to..?". I quickly tell them about the grammar of this semi-fixed sentence: present perfect, the use of "ever" and its meaning, the fact that it is a question, etc. They kind of try hard to understand what I am saying.

Then, I tell them to forget all that and keep in mind that "have you ever been to...?" is a common expression in English used to ask people if they have already been to a place. In Portuguese, it means something like "você alguma vez já esteve em...?" or "você alguma vez na vida já foi a...?". I ask them to repeat the sentence in English, I work on their pronunciation. I ask them to tell me the meaning of the sentence. After that, I give examples: "have you ever been to Brasília?", "have you ever been to Salvador?", "have you ever been to Rio de Janeiro?". I work with this sentence till I realize they got it. Finally, I ask them if learning the whole grammar was necessary. I also tell them that they can learn the grammar if they want to, but they can do it when they feel ready to it.

Well, as you can see what I really do is convince learners (show them) that learning/memorizing the technicalities of the language is of no use for them at using the language communicatively. If they want to learn (or feel like learning) the core grammar, they can get a grammar book and study it. But they have to do this when they have enough material (language input) to compare and analyze what they know.

The ideia is to show them that the same thing happens in Portuguese. That is, we just learn grammar points (substantivos, plural dos substantivos, conjunção coordenada e subordinada, etc.) when we already have enough language material to compare and analyze with the formal grammar.

Once I am sure they agree with me, I keep teaching lexically without much problem. The thing is: we have to convice them with examples; we have to show them that it is possible (and more fun) to learn language in a new way - be it lexically or not.

I hope you have liked this. Let's keep talking about it!

Como a abordagem lexical pode mudar o modo como você ensina? Empty Abordagem Lexical

Mensagem  Patrick Sampaio Ter Jan 10, 2012 9:14 pm

Empty Lexical Approach

Mensagem  Denise Novaes Qua Jan 11, 2012 2:05 pm

Hellooooo guys!!

I confess for me this is new and different. I took an English course in 1993, that is, almost 20 years ago, and, since I've always loved English and Portuguese and have always loved the grammar of the language as well, I was ok with the fact that it's not that boring or impossible learning through a traditional approach. Because, if that had worked for me, why would that ever be impossible for other students? After all, I loved my teacher and enjoyed the method through which I learned! Why couldn't or shouldn't I teach the same way? (self-centered? narrow-minded? me??? hahahah)
But the thing is...and I've already mentioned that in my first response, students nowadays are definetely not the same as 5 or 10...let alone 20 years ago! And I had to learn that the hard way. That means I've been changing my mind (Thanks God and Mr. de Lima!!!) and surrendered to the fact that I must catch up and update to new ideas, techniques and approaches more and more each day. I'm demanding. Of course I'm always looking for the best for myself and my students.
This Lexical Approach will definetely change and improve the way I teach. I believe it'll turn into an easier and more convenient way for the students' understanding. On the other hand, I fear something: in what sense will I be teaching my students to memorize sentences, expressions, phrases, idioms, etc rather than make them think - to form these structures? I mean, through the Lexical Approach, I have this feeling that I'll be teaching them "ready-made sentences" rather than make them think over what they want and need to express. For example: when I say "o livro está na mesa", they already know what it means due to the jokes, songs and whatever. It takes them less than 2 secs to translate this sentence into English. It's something already internalized. But when I tell them to form a sentence like "a carteira está em cima do sofá" - which has exactly the same structure: "on the" - they CAN'T! they get lost! The same happens with "what's your name". Everyboy knows what it means!! So, why is that, that when they're asked to formulate "qual é o nome dela? ou qual é sua cor favorita?" they have doubts? Do you get my point? I hope I made myself clear.. : )

Other than that, I have a hard time teaching students who are crazy about the "whys". Some of them get mad when they dont get why sentences are formed the way they're formed or why expressions or idioms are so different in English. And I, in my turn, get mad at the fact that they are not open-minded enough to realize they're learning a new Language and that means they're learning a new: CULTURE, STRUCTURE, WAY OF THINKING, SPEAKING AND FEELING. Oh my!!!

Como a abordagem lexical pode mudar o modo como você ensina? Empty Gramática não é o essencial

Mensagem  Denise Fernandes Qua Jan 11, 2012 3:26 pm

Empty Lexical Approach

Mensagem  Eliane Ibrahim Qua Jan 11, 2012 8:07 pm

Good evening everyone,

I've always loved grammar and I'll always will, I don't think this conflicts with using the Lexical Approach to teach English in class, as long as grammar is used properly; people change and we must change, in the past people used to learn English listening to music, nowadays apart from that some learn English playing games, so we must adapt to this new reality if we want to keep our students motivated and very willing to learn, some like grammar and the traditional method of teaching English, many don't. Although I firmly believe the Lexical Approach is a wonderful way of teaching I couldn't agree more with Denise Novaes when she says that teaching students most common expressions, fixed and semi-fixed sentences and make them repeat it perhaps will make them only know it by heart but not will make the students to think and be able to form others sentences easily when they are in a similar context and require changes in vocabulary, I also fear it and I actually see this happening frequently in class with Lexical Approach learners, however what I've seen is that students who have "noticing" and I'm sure teacher Denilso will be delighted to tell us more about this word for those of you who don't know it yet, I've noticed that students who have a strong noticing ability they adapt better to the Lexical Approach and also learn faster, and have no problems in using the same grammar/vocabulary learned and they adapt it correctly to other situation without any problems, however the ones who lack this ability tend to get confused
and totally lost when they need to use the same structure as per Denise's example: "the book is on the table" to "a carteira está em cima do sofá". Anyway, we all know people are different and learn in different ways, that's way many students won't like the Lexical Approach while others will fall in love with it, for me as and English teacher I strongly believe the Lexical Approach is more natural to teach and once applied accordingly is really effective.
Just a thought to start interacting guys! Have a good night!

Daniella,

As mentioned before, I've always been interested in the lexical approach but I'm still seeking ways to put it into practice effectively. One of the greatest contributions it can bring to my class is the fact that language should not being taught linearly and a greater emphasis should be given to input. After all, it is through being in contact with (real) language that our students will be able to internalize all the chunks, collocations and the grammar of the language.

Hey Folks!

Like our friend Denise, I took a course (from a famous chain) in the 90´s that was mostly grammar. I spent almost 5 years trying to understand that freaking grammar! I was a teenager back then and I wasn´t interested at all in all that!
The point is, as soon as I finished the course I never touched the books again until I decide to enjoy an exchange program in the US.
That forced me to go back to the books and, the thing is, when I got in the US, I completely fell in love with the language! I was able to learn the language without that grammar.
I was so in love with the language that I even started studying grammar, and when I came back to Brazil I decided to teach English.
I am a journalist and I didn´t have any English teaching experience back then. And that is the major reason that brings me to this course, besides truly believe the Lexical Approach is a great method. Now, I`ve been teaching English for 3 years. Until last year I used to work for an important English School chain that doesn´t work with the lexical approach. But now, this year I´ll start at a new chain that has the lexical approach as its major method and that´s why I´m really looking forward to learning more about it.
See ya!

A "like" button in this forum would be a great idea, I agree! Very Happy

As I read the material we received, I realized I learned English lexically! My family moved to the US when I was 12 and most of what I know about the language I learned during the 4 years we lived there.
When I stared the teaching, the fact that I left Brazil so young and didn't get a chance to really learn Portuguese grammar bothered me, because some of my students - specially those in the 'enem' phase of their lives - study really hard at school and have very good knowledge of the portuguese grammar structure, and they always ask about the English grammar, in the hope that they will be able to find something similar about the two.
I believe one of the most important rules to learning a foreign language is 'forget what you know about your native one'. Don't try to compare and don't insist on translating everything. This happens because we've been taught from a very young age that grammar is more important. Remember how portuguese whas taught back when you were at school? Thankfully, the material used at the school I work is very similar to what I've now learned is called Lexical Approach, and this course will really help me understand more about it and improve my methodology.

Mensagem  priscilaarthur Sex Jan 13, 2012 5:24 am

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE !!!!

Eles saiam do ensino médio mal sabendo o verbo TO BE e sua utilização em frases.

Com o inglês é a mesma coisa, eu posso saber dizer I've never been to Brasília sem entender de gramática.
